They say everything starts with a great idea!

In 2004/2005, Government legislation paved the way in the UK for the operation of community radio stations for the first time. For Felixstowe's diverse community, the way forward seemed clear.

Some of our team gained basic experience at other stations before forming Felixstowe Radio as a Community Interest Company in 2007. We began internet broadcasting, using minimal equipment, and gradually took over the front room of a small house in Felixstowe.

Grant applications followed, most of which we unsuccessful, but slowly volunteers joined the team and enthusiasm carried the venture forward. Contacts were made and it soon became obvious that there was not just an interest but a demand for the services we could provide.

One day a ‘To Let’ sign appeared at 3 Great Eastern Square. Since that day we have moved forward. We obtained an FM broadcast licence for the local area, applied for more grants, and actually obtained enough to give us some confidence, but not enough to proceed.

Volunteer enthusiasm burgeoned, as did the many donations of materials, time and effort we received.

The shop is open, the station broadcasts on 107.5 FM. Now we have really started!
