The A14 is (unfortunately) the only main road entering Felixstowe - but that need not be the case.

The A120 links Harwich to the A12 and then to London, there is also a good rail link to Harwich. There's little reason why the A14 could not be diverted across to Harwich, with a bridge or tunnel to Shotley, and then another to Harwich. This route to to carry both vehicle and rail traffic. Land around Shotley towards Manningtree would be opened up for development.

The port at Ipswich should no longer be considered viable for commercial traffic. With the increased leisure facilities linked to the old dockside at Ipswich it is unrealistic to invest further in commercial traffic. Felixstowe port, Harwich, or perhaps even Shotley should contain facilities to handle non-container shipping.

The A14 should also be diverted East at Walton to span the river Deben. That would open up the peninsular at Bawdsey, where there is considerable scope for residential and commercial development, none of which can be realised at present because of the poor transport access. There may be potential to develop a small new town, perhaps close to Alderton, if such an access route, for road and rail, could be developed.

These two new transport links would open up the Colnesis Peninsular, and the town of Felixstowe, and reduce the dependence upon the A14 and the Orwell Bridge, which is, once again, being examined for signs of subsidence and will always remain a bottleneck especially during inclement weather..

These routes would open access to the ferry port at Harwich, which could be further developed to handle more cruise liners.

It would also open up possibilities for air traffic to use the old airfield at Rendlesham, or elsewhere within Suffolk Coastal District, as the catchment area for such a facility would be greatly increased.

Rail traffic from Felixstowe, at present restricted to a single ine, but likely to have a dual line for parts of the line to Ipswich in the near future, could have alternative routes. At present it is forced around the north of Ipswich. Is there any real reason why it could not also use the Orwell Bridge?
