Within the town the car is allowed to dominate. It is noisy, pollutes and takes up too much valuable space. Many journeys within the town need not be made by car: walking, cycling and electric chairs are all more acceptable than the car. Car parking should be free at all public car parks. Studies have shown that closure of shopping areas to motor traffic, provided there is adequate parking available, will increase retail activity. The town has the potential to attract many visitors, who will come to the seaside, and will also use the town - but an easy link from beach to town is vital. The easiest solution would be to build a multi-storey car park, beside the Spa Pavilion or at the existing car park on Convalescent Hill. With a lift installed such facilities would immediately revitalise the town. The A14 controls the town, and the port dominates the A14. Lorries should be restricted to the nearside lane, and the Dock Spur roundabout give priority to Felixstowe residents. It is often impossible to get out of the town at peak periods. Train services are now being pushed aside by the needs of the port. The worst example came last year when the Orient Express organised a trip to Felixstowe which the train companies refused to allow to run from Ipswich into the town, making customers board a coach. What a marketing disaster! Bus services are fragmented, difficult to judge, with poor route indicators. Buses run infrequently and timetables are hard to find.
