It's suggested that Felixstowe does not have enough houses, particularly smaller houses suitable for smaller families. Nor is there enough social housing. Is this really true? The general mix of housing does not vary a great deal from that found in any town. There are probably more bungalows and houses suitable for older residents, but that's a function of demand, and planning. The estate land in old Felixstowe: Colneis Avenue area was clearly developed to attract older occupants. There is a lack of affordable housing - once again a national problem, brought about during 1980s when house ownership was a desirable objective. What to do now? The Council are under pressure to build more houses - and Trinity College own land at Trimley that looks ripe for exploitation. It will be disastrous for the peninsular, which does not have the infrastructure in place to cope with such enormous growth. The concept of growth should be curtailed. Stability is more important if the town is to remain attractive. |
