The Council are to spend another £300,000 on emergency protection works to safeguard Felixstowe’s sea wall and lessen the risk of flooding in the resort. Heavy waves on Monday caused damage along the promenade with slabs of paving lifted up by the force of the sea, coping stones damaged at the top of the sea wall, and a battering for some of the beach huts. The sea wall has moved three inches along a 70 yard section of the promenade. This should be a government problem, it's beyond the scope of a local council who should not have to bear this responsibility. The Envroment Agency is the proper body for coastal protection. This is a dereliction of their duties. And we are no further forward in finding out why the erosion continues. Where's the research to help us find out? Is that hidden because everyone suspects it's the dredging of the channel for the port? The government benefits from all the business rates generated by the port - money it keeps to itself, and never returns to the local community. Grandiose schemes are in place to regenerate Felixstowe, Felixstowe Forums will give us all a better future - not that we can participate in such discussions - but they will not matter a jot when the sea invades again, and more people lose their lives. |
